1. High school is where people figure out who they are or who they want to become. The possibilities are endless and agonizing. Every choice seems pivotal. Later in life you learn to go with the flow but when you’re a teen it’s like you’re constantly trying to paddle upstream, in a leaky boat, with a broken paddle. And everyone around you keeps asking why you’re freaking out.

2. Falling in love for the first time is exciting and terrifying. And it’s often a very public event, especially in small towns where everyone knows who kissed who five seconds after it happened.

3. Because of all the drama associated with high school there is a lot of potential for humor, and I love making people laugh.

4. High school is a place of first loves, and first heart aches. I think those feelings are more powerful and more fun to read and write about.

5. You never forget the stress of high school. My mother still has nightmares that she can’t open the combination lock on her locker and she’s going to be late for class. I still have dreams that I have to take a final exam for a class I never attended.
