Social Networking, or Tumbling and Stumbling

ChrisFor Writers

It’s Monday. Again. Yawn. I am not a morning person. I do not hop out of bed ready to take on the world. I drag myself to the kitchen where I suck down a cup of coffee. Once the caffeine kicks in, I pour myself a bowl of Cinnamon Chex and turn on my laptop.

It’s time for social networking. While I eat breakfast and drink my second cup of coffee, I check in on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. Once I’ve liked, retweeted, and pinned, I move on to the more nebulous sites, like Tumblr and Stumbleupon. I’m still trying to figure out Tumblr. I repost and like things, but I’m not sure what type of reach this site has.

Stumbleupon is a fun time suck. You pick topics you’re interested in, such as books or writing. Then you click the stumble button and an article pops up. If you like it, you hit thumbs up. If you don’t like it, you hit thumbs down. This trains the site to give you articles similar to the ones you like. It also allows you to upload your blog posts to the database, so others might stumble upon your website.

I also joined LinkedIn and Google+. At this point, I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do with either of them. I post and like/re-post articles. I add people to circles and networks. In the end, I hope all this social networking will create a group of people who might be interested in buying my book, Going Down In Flames, when it comes out in January.

I’m more prone to buy a book if I’ve interacted with the author on social media. I’m hoping the same holds true for other authors, readers, and bloggers.  In the meantime, I’ll keep tweeting and pinning and sharing and liking and tumbling and stumbling.

What’s your favorite social network?
