What type of main characters do you prefer? I like smart, snarky chicks who kick butt mentally and, or physically. If the main character resembles a Victoria’s secret model, I’m out. She has to have some flaw or insecurity otherwise I can’t relate. Because, newsflash, we all have wounds from the past which shape the people we become.
I listened to CC Hunter present at my local writing meeting a few weeks ago. She said teens either try to emulate their parents or avoid becoming anything like what they’ve seen and end up being the polar opposite. This struck me, because I know someone who hated school because he felt lost in the crowd. There wasn’t a single teacher who took a special interest in him. What did he become? An award-winning teacher who makes sure all his students feel special.
Why do I prefer snarky kick butt chicks? What in my past draws me to these characters? Here’s a little secret, I have a running commentary in my head of smart ass remarks which I do my best to suppress. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve thrown caution to the wind and started voicing more of these thoughts. Sometimes people laugh, sometimes they look at me like I’m obnoxious.
When it comes to my main characters love interest, I want him to have intelligence to match hers. Guys seem to hold their cards closer to their chest. They don’t spout their plans or their feelings. They talk less in general. Anyone who has tried to have a conversation with their significant other knows this is true. You want a deep conversation. They nod and smile and say, “Sure, or whatever.” And you fantasize about hitting them over the head with a frying pan. (Oh, wait…if that’s just me…don’t tell anyone. )
