I love how this scene highlights Jaxon and Bryn’s frenemy type relationship. The scene was part of a sub-plot in Book 2 which was vetoed. I may find a way to add it to Book 3. Until then, I thought I’d share it here.
Bryn checked the time on her bedside clock. It was half past two. “Curfew doesn’t start until 8pm. We could go to Rhianna’s house and take a look around.”
“We can’t fly there,” Jaxon said, “Someone would see us.”
She couldn’t just sit around doing nothing. And all of a sudden, Bryn had a plan. “You’re going to give me driving lessons in your new car.”
“Like hell I am.”
“That’s our cover, you idiot. We tell your mother and my grandmother that you’re giving me lessons and I just happened to drive near Rhianna’s house.”
“That might work,” Jaxon said, “but you’re not driving my car.”
An hour later, Bryn waited in the circle drive for Jaxon. He pulled up in a low slung black sports car with curved lines and shiny wheels. The entire vehicle screamed, I have more money than you. Cars had never mattered to her, but this one was cool. Bryn opened the passenger door and climbed in. Jaxon looked at her expectantly. Good God. Were all male egos so fragile? Better to keep him in a good mood.
“Nice car.”
“Yes, it is.”
They drove in silence for a few minutes, until Bryn was about to bounce out of her seat. “Do we have a plan?”
“Can’t take quiet, can you?”
“No. Answer the question.” She turned in her seat so she could see his facial expressions better.
“We’ll claim you drove near Rhianna’s estate and we decided to stop by for a visit. In case anyone is keeping an eye on the area, I’ll drive around back to the service entrance. It’s never locked.”
“Why not?”
“Because staff come and go as they need to.” Jaxon said this like it was a common fact.
“Won’t it seem odd if a Westgate shows up anywhere but the front door?”
His eyebrows came together in that I don’t like what you said but now I have to think about it way. “Maybe we should go to the front door.”
Large trees lined the road they drove down. Where were they? Five minutes after they left her grandparent’s estate it was like the forest swallowed them whole. Wait a minute. “I haven’t seen a road sign in this forest, ever.”
“Why would we need road signs?” Jaxon asked.
“To know what road leads where. All the roads through this forest look the same.”
“Brilliant observation.” He fake wondered. “Perhaps they were designed that way.”
“What? Why would they do that?”
“To confuse outsiders and keep people from finding our estates. We don’t need road signs. Once you’ve been somewhere you should always be able to find your way back.”
Maybe he could find his way back. She wasn’t so sure.
He laughed. “You don’t know, do you?”
“Laugh at me again, and I’ll accidentally spit my gum out on your shiny new dashboard.”
Screech. The car came to a halt. Bryn jerked forward. The seat belt dug into her shoulder. “What the hell?” She looked in front of the car expecting to see a squirrel or a rabbit.
Jaxon pushed a button and her window rolled down. “Gum. Out. Now.”
“Seriously?”
“Do I look like I’m joking?” His eyes were narrowed and his hand clenched the steering wheel.
“Fine.” She leaned over and spit the gum out. “Happy?”
She pushed the button to raise her window. Nothing happened. Then it rose up as Jaxon pushed a button on his side of the car.
“Wow. You can’t even let me roll up the window?”
“No.”
“Control freak.” As they wound down the tree-lined road she considered sneezing and spraying the windshield for spite. Maybe she’d save that for the next time he pissed her off. “Tell me why I should be able to find any place I’ve been to once.”
“You know how birds fly using the earth’s magnetic shield as a guide?”
“Yes.”
“We fly….” Jaxon let the silence roll out.
Sneezing on the windshield was sounding better and better. “Because we fly, like birds, we can navigate by the magnetic shield too?”
“Yes.”
